This year, 12 Redmayne-Bentley colleagues have signed up for the James Potter Eggs Corporate
Relay. Here are the teams, what they do and some of the reasons why they chose
to take part.
Team 1 - Your Pace or Mine
Carolyn Black – Investment Manager
Having taken part in last year’s Corporate Challenge, whilst feeling a little rusty after a year off running due to injury, I am determined to beat last year’s time and I am looking forward to taking up the challenge of the first leg of the 2014 York race. I have a half-marathon and a couple of 10km runs lined up over the summer which should help me to build up to the big event (and I have just invested in a new pair of trainers so I have no excuse)! In the past my walking / running / cycling fundraising efforts have raised money for local and national cancer-related charities and I am proud to be running in October for St Gemma’s, having witnessed the amazing service provided by the St Gemma’s team.

I’ve never really been a runner, but last year’s team really inspired me to dust off my old trainers and give it a go this time around. I can’t say I’m looking forward to the training part of it, but I’ve been reassured that it’ll be well worth it on the day. Last year’s runners generated lots of positive feedback from our clients and colleagues and we managed to raise a record total for our then charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support. Hopefully, we’ll go one step further this year and break that total.

My last foray into the world of running was nearly ten years ago when I did the Great North Run so this event will give me the opportunity to (hopefully!) regain a good level of fitness although I am now starting to question the wisdom of signing up for the longest leg! I plan to gradually build up to the event week-by-week in terms of my distance running by going for a combination of morning and evening runs up and down the hills in Menston and Ilkley whilst taking care to avoid any sheep on the roads. I am proud to be running for our chosen charity of the year, and hopefully we will collectively raise a good total which will be put to great use by St Gemma’s Hospice.

Well, I am very pleased to be now running in the corporate relay marathon. With only a few weeks to train it’s going to be a challenge as I have not run for a few years now. My training schedule has been fairly steady at the moment, with most of my time spent in the gym on the treadmill, but I’ll start doing a few road runs this weekend. Hopefully I won’t let the team down and hit the wall after the first mile marker.

I’m not really a regular runner, so I am hoping that by taking part in this run that my fitness will improve as well as my running ability. I will train for this by participating in park runs as they cover 5km which is a very similar distance to my 3.2 mile leg of the relay. I have friends whose relatives have stayed at St Gemma’s Hospice, so I have heard about the great things that they do there so I am very happy to be able to raise money to support them.

AC/DC Team Captain – Anna Crump –P.A. to the Partners
I enjoy almost all sport/athletics, but more as a spectator than a participant! I have next-to-no running experience (I did a 10k for charity three years ago, but failed to build on that training) so I am pretty much starting from scratch. I love team events however, I am reasonably competitive, and I am excited to be raising funds for the fabulous charity that is St Gemma’s Hospice, so I’m delighted to be taking part. I hope to train by starting to ‘jog’ home from work a couple of times a week (3.8 miles) and build up my pace and stamina doing that.

I have been a Trustee at St Gemma’s Hospice for six years, latterly chairing their Finance Committee. Anyone involved in the Charity Sector will identify with how rewarding it is to be part of such an organisation. I have been on the other side of the desk, responsible for monitoring the Hospice’s investment managers and safeguarding the Charity’s reserves! I plan to pass the baton on in October – in more ways than one! I will step down as a Trustee, having completed two terms in office, and run a leg (the longest, I fear!) in the Yorkshire Marathon Corporate Relay, as part of one of two Redmayne-Bentley Teams. St Gemma’s Hospice is the firm’s Charity of the Year, so it is a great opportunity to fundraise.

I was disappointed to not make the first draft when the teams were chosen, so I was delighted when I was called up as a last minute replacement. I’m a keen runner and I’m really looking forward to training with the rest of the team and offering any help where possible. St Gemma’s is a fantastic charity and worthy cause, so I’m just pleased to be able to contribute.

Over the years the firm has been involved in a number of fitness-related team charity events and they've always been great fun. I'm a little rusty on the running front – but keen to get in training. I’m proud to support St Gemma’s Hospice, which offers meritorious care not only to patients as individuals, but also to their families.

I am very pleased to be selected to help a great charity. St Gemma’s does fantastic work and this is a great opportunity to raise funds and their profile. I used to play lots of sports, football and hockey every week along with badminton and swimming. Sadly, that stopped when I left school soooo many years ago. This is a challenge for me as I have not done any real exercise in some years, except walking to work which is a four mile round trip. I hope to build up my fitness by running home and doing longer runs with my team mates in the coming weeks and months.

I’ve been a casual runner for several years, but struggle to find the time and motivation to go more than once a fortnight. I hope that by joining a team, I will find my competitive streak and get fit, hopefully raising some money for charity in the process.
